bubblewrap usa i namespace Linux per avviare contenitori non privilegiati. Questi contenitori possono essere utilizzati per tenere in sandbox applicazioni semi-fidate, come app Flatpak, creatori di miniature di immagini/video e componenti di browser web, oppure per eseguire programmi in un diverso stack di librerie, come un runtime Flatpak o un diverso rilascio Debian.
Questo pacchetto, in modo predefinito, fa affidamento su un kernel con abilitati i namespace utente. I kernel Debian e Ubuntu ufficiali sono adatti.
Nei kernel senza namespace utente, gli amministratori di sistema possono rendere bwrap eseguibile con setuid root, permettendogli di creare contenitori non privilegiati anche se i processi utente normali non possono.
