fakeroot fornisce un falso "ambiente root" usando trucchetti LD_PRELOAD e SysV IPC (o TCP). Mette wrapper intorno a getuid(), chown(), stat() e altre funzioni di manipolazione di file, in modo che gli utenti non privilegiati possano, ad esempio, popolare archivi .deb con file il cui proprietario รจ root; svariati strumenti di compilazione utilizzano fakeroot per questo compito in modo predefinito.
