Questo è un modulo API che permette ai programmi Ruby di interfacciarsi con database MySQL. Tipicamente viene richiesta automaticamente dai pacchetti che forniscono programmi Ruby che hanno bisogno di questa funzionalità; è necessario installarla direttamente solamente se si intende scrivere da sé programmi di questo tipo. Si potrebbe preferire il pacchetto ruby-mysql2 rispetto a ruby-mysql, dato che i benchmark hanno dimostrato che è più veloce, non è bloccante e gestisce la codifica UTF-8 dei database.
