NAT-PMP è il diretto concorrente alle specifiche UPnP IGD. Fornisce un modo di fare attraversamento NAT. Fa parte delle specifiche del protocollo Bonjour. Attualmente è principalmente gestito dal software e dall'hardware Apple. Per avere a disposizione un modo per integrare le capacità NAT-PMP ad un router *BSD, Linux o (Open)Solaris, bisogna dare uno sguardo a MiniUPnPd che gestisce NAT-PMP in aggiunta a UPnP dal dicembre 2007!

libnatpmp è un tentativo di fare un'implementazione portabile e completamente conforme del protocollo NAT-PMP per il lato client. È basato sui socket non bloccanti e tutte le chiamate dell'API sono asincrone. È per questo molto facile integrare il codice NAT-PMP in qualsiasi codice pilotato da eventi.
