Pakken ff tilbyder datastrukturer, der er lagret på disk men opfører sig (næsten) som om de var i RAM ved gennemsigtigt kun at oversætte en sektion (sidestørrelse) i hovedhukommelsen - det effektive virtuelle hukommelsesforbrug per ff-objekt. Ff understøtter R's atomiske standarddatatyper »double«, »logical«, »raw« og »integer« samt ikkestandard atomiske typer boolesk (1 bit), quad (2 bit ej underskrevet), nibble (4 bit ej underskrevet), byte (1 byte signed with NAs), ubyte (1 byte ej underskrevet), short (2 byte underskrevet med NA'er), ushort (2 byte ej underskrevet), single (4 byte kommatal med NA'er). For eksempel tillader »quad« effektiv lagring af genomdata som en »A«,»T«,»G«,»C«-faktor. De ej underskreven typer understøtter »cirkulær« aritmetik. Der er også understøttelse for close-to-atomic-typerne »factor«, »ordered«, »POSIXct«, »Date« og tilpassede close-to-atomic-typer.
