Inotify (inode notify) er et undersystem for Linux-kernen, der overvåger hændelser i filsystemer og rapporterer disse hændelser til programmer i real tid via API.

Inotify kan bruges til at overvåge individuelle filer eller mapper. Når en mappe overvåges, vil inotify returnere hændelser for selve mappen og for filer i mappen.

Inotify-tools er et sæt af programmer til kommandolinjen for Linux, der tilbyder en simpel grænseflade til inotify. Disse programmer kan bruges til at overvåge og agere på filsystemhændelser. Inotify-tools består af fire redskaber: inotifywait, inotifywatch fsnotifywait og fsnotifywatch.

Inotifywait blokerer ganske enkelt for inotify-hændelser, hvilket gør den egnet for brug i skalskripter.

Inotifywatch indsamler statistik om filsystembrug og viser antal for hver inotify-hændelse.

Fsnotifywait og fsnotifywatch svarer til inotifywait og inotifywatch, men de bruger Linux's fanotify(7)-grænsefladen som standard. Fanotify-API'en tilbyder også påmindelse og aflytning af filsystemhændelser. Yderligere funktioner sammenlignet med inotify(7)-API'en inkluderer muligheden for at overvåge alle objekterne i et monteret filsystem, mulighed for at lave beslutninger om adgangsrettigheder og mulighed for at læse og ændre filer før adgang for andre programmer.

Inotify-tools er også nyttig for sikkerhedsaktiviteter i brandmurssystemer eller til at registrere ændringer og indsættelse af nye filer på internetservere af angribere.
