Dette er GNU's standard-filkomprimeringsværktøj, som også er Debian's standardkomprimeringsværktøj. Det bearbejder typisk filer med filendelsen '.gz', men kan også dekomprimere filer med filendelsen '.Z' oprettet med 'compress'
