QEMU user mode emulation (static binaries)

QEMU is a fast processor emulator: currently the package supports Alpha, ARM, CRIS, i386, LoongArch, M68k (ColdFire), MicroBlaze, MIPS, PowerPC, RISC-V, S390x, SH4, SPARC, x86-64, Xtensa and other emulations. By using dynamic translation it achieves reasonable speed while being easy to port on new host CPUs.

This package provides statically linked user mode emulation binaries. In user mode QEMU can launch Linux processes compiled for one CPU on another CPU.

If qemu-user-binfmt package is also installed, it will register binary format handlers from this qemu-user package with the kernel automatically so it will be possible to run foreign binaries directly. Without qemu-user-binfmt, it is possible to register certain binfmt(s) by using:

    cat /usr/share/qemu/binfmt.d/qemu-ARCH.conf \
      > /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc/register
